OSHA Certification

OSHA certification is one of those broad based terms that encompasses a wide array of training and testing programs that are designed to ensure good safety practices in a variety of environments. OSHA, or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is the primary department in the U.S. government that oversees, and enforces safety regulations and compliance in the workplace throughout the United States.

One particularly effective way that OSHA helps workers perform their jobs safely, while minimizing risks at work is through mandatory training and certifications for some occupations.

Courses include a 10 hour, and 30 hour certification, as well as specific training for forklift certification, hazwoper training certification (for handling hazardous waste), lockout-tagout procedures, blood-borne pathogen certification, and confined space entry. Many of these programs can be found online.

An employer is required to keep abreast of current certification requirements for their respective industry and to insure that their workforce has completed all the necessary training, and that they hold a valid certification as required by OSHA. As an employee, or safety manager, if you need assistance to determine what safety certifications may apply to your workplace be sure to contact an OSHA compliance officer in your area. Go to the regional office listing to find someone near you.
