U.S. Lawmakers Block In Flight Safety Rules For Batteries
Lithium batteries are known to be a fire hazard but despite this, and several actual in-flight incidents of on board combustion, U.S. lawmakers have tentatively agreed to block the Obama administration from requiring that air shipments of lithium batteries be treated as hazardous cargo. This decision comes under pressure from various industries and foreign representatives.
The Airline Pilots Association and the Independent Pilots Association are not favorable to the decision.
“We’re very concerned that unless this issue is addressed we’ll continue to see accidents and we’ll continue to see fatalities,” said Mark Rogers, who heads the Air Line Pilots Association’s committee on hazardous cargo.

Travis, president of Independent Pilots Association, which represents UPS pilots, said in a statement.
The FAA bill “is an opportunity for the U.S. to lead by setting a higher standard on the carriage of lithium batteries,” Travis said.
Lithium batteries have become widely used and popular in a variety of applications which is making their routine transport much more common. Where safety is concerned, one of the worst possible situations is a fire that occurs in-flight. Lithium batteries are prone to combustion from high heat, and when ignited, the battery can generate temperatures of 4,000 degrees or more, making the likelihood very high, that once a single damaged battery ignites, others nearby may also catch fire.
