HazWOPER Training For Hazardous Waste Emergencies

HazWOPER training is mandatory for any person who will be visiting a site that contains hazardous waste material. The training is designed to equip the trainees with protective skills to keep them remain safe while working or visiting the site. The level of training can vary depending on the time you spend on the site and the level of exposure to hazardous waste. It not only keeps employees safe, but also protects the company against any legal issues.

How HazWOPER Works

Also known as Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency, HazWOPER training prepares the trainees who will be working in an area with hazardous waste. They are taught how to handle the material, the nature of the hazardous material, how to recognize it as well as protective measures which include wearing protective clothing. The trainees are also taught how to contain the waste material and how to decontaminate it. The level of training will depend on the level of exposure.

If you work on the site on general duties, you will need to go for training for 40 hours before you can be allowed to start working. The training is followed by field training for three days where you are taught how to recognize toxic waste materials and the measures you should take to protect yourself. Supervisors and managers, on the other hand, are required to go for 8 hours of training in addition to the 40 hours training. Emergency workers such as medical personnel, firefighters and policemen are also expected to go for training for 8 hours. It is also mandatory to do follow up training every year whereby you are expected to take an 8 hour refresher course.

HazWOPER Protective Equipment

HazWOPER training includes how to use different protective equipment. The type of equipment can vary based on your level of work and your exposure to hazardous waste. Employees who work in areas where they there is high concentration of vapor and there is a high chance of coming into contact with hazardous material are expected to wear respirators, gloves, a full body suit and boots. If your work does not involve much contact with toxic material, you can work without a face shield, but you must wear a respirator. Other protective clothing that you may need to wear includes safety goggles, boot covers, face mask and a helmet.

What will happen in case of an accident?

An employee who gets sick in their place of work because of personal negligence can not be compensated. The law states clearly that employees must wear protective clothing while working on risk laden site and if you get sick because of your negligence you are the one to blame. However, it is the duty of the employer to provide the protective clothing. An employer who hires untrained workers will be fined aggressively.

Companies must ensure that their employees have gone through HazWOPER training before they can allow them to start working on the site. The training is designed to keep employees and those visiting a hazardous site safe. Failure to follow this rule can result in heavy fining by OSHA since the company will be putting the workers in great danger.
