The Basics Of Hands-Only CPR
Hands-Only CPR does not involve mouth to mouth breath support, and is therefore less risky, in the eyes of those providing the support. Some people historically have resisted providing CPR because of the fear involved in fluid transmission via contact with the mouth. With Hands-Only CPR, only chest compressions are used.
As with any emergency situation, someone should be directed to call 911 and as soon as possible, safety personnel should begin applying hard and fast chest compressions with very minor interruptions or breaks.
It needs to be kept in mind that HO CPR is only suggested for people who have collapsed suddenly. For someone that is found unconscious and not breathing regularly, traditional CPR which involves chest compressions and breath support should be used. Conventional CPR is also suggested for drowning victims or those who may have been affected by breathing difficulties.
In testing, Hands-Only CPR has been shown to be just as effective as conventional CPR in the early minutes of a cardiac event, and while traditional methods may provide better support in certain instances, in most any case, any attempt at CPR is better than none at all.
CPR, regardless of the method used, is still something that should be supported through routine training sessions. This training helps people overcome any resistance or apprehension about how to help someone in distress and reaction time can be important. The American Heart Association’s 22-minutee CPR Anytime program is a very good training tool to refer to.
