2011 Top Ten Workplace Safety Violations Announced By OSHA

It’s safe to say that you can learn a lot through history, and even more when there’s statistics to support various trends.  This is certainly true with OSHA’s recent announcement of the top ten workplace violations for 2011.

Leading violations revolved around two particular safety standards, 926.501 for fall protection, and 1926.451 for scaffolding. Both are involved in the construction industry.

OSHA makes a point to publish these results every year, with the intent on raising awareness, targeting improved training, and applying what is learned through the instruction, to improve the safety record in each category.

The remainder of the top ten violations came from the following standards.

  • Powered industrial trucks — 1910.178.
  • Ladders in construction — 1926.1053.
  • Electrical systems design — 1910.303.
  • Machine guarding — 1910.212.

  • Respiratory protection — 1910.134.
  • Lockout tagout — 1910.147.
  • Electrical, wiring methods — 1910.305.

OSHA provides a number of helpful publications that target each one of the areas above and they are available for employers to use to improve safety in their particular workplace.
